Playing in the Dirt {Personal}

May 16th, 2012

We’ve been talking a lot lately about the importance of eating clean, whole foods.  Maybe it’s because we are from the country and grew up watching corn grow and cattle graze.  Or maybe it’s just because we’re getting older and are realizing that eating pre-packaged and fast food isn’t going to keep us around very long.  Whatever it is it is a topic that comes up frequently around here.  Goodness knows we’re a long cry from being the healthiest bunch – but we’re trying!  Not long after Sarah and Jon moved (which happens to be just down the street from Chris and I) we decided it was time to try our hand at gardening.  Luckily we have a veteran gardner, in the form of my grandma, living here in KC who came over and gave us tons of tips of where to place our garden, what to plant, and a general crash course in gardening.

We finally got around to planting last night and are BEYOND excited to watch our garden grow.  It was so satisfying to watch the space change and seeing how in a few weeks we can be eating food we grew!!!!!!  Send up a prayer for our baby plants!

Rodney & Ciera {Engagement Session}

May 10th, 2012

Last weekend we were finally able to do Ciera & Rodney’s engagement session.  I say finally because with all of the rain we’ve had in Kansas City we had to reschedule the last time we set up a day to do it.  They were bummed, we were bummed, and overall it just kind of stunk to have to do.  We were thrilled when the weather cooperated with us this last weekend and we were able to get some bright sun for our shoot.  Unfortuantly though it was HOT outside.  And when I say hot I mean H-O-T-T, hot.  WHEW.

Even with all the weather we were able to get some great shots.  One of the first things we noticed is that these two communicate seamlessly.  The things they say between each other happen in gestures, looks in the eye, and quiet words.  Rodney seems to be the most himself when he lets Ciera take center stage.  He tucks in behind her and whispers something in her ear that brings out a bright smile.  And as cheesy as this sounds, isn’t that what love is about?

Not only do these two make a beautiful couple, they have an adorable son, Jakylin.  He wasn’t so sure about the camera’s at first but by the time we were done he had warmed up to us.  (Check out his pose at the end of this post for further proof!)  This little guy had us eating out of the palm of his hand!

Rodney & Ciera - thanks for sticking it out & sweating with us on Saturday!

Another Early Morning {Boudoir Behind the Scenes}

May 8th, 2012

If we’ve said it once we’ve said it a million times – boudoir is THE MOST fun EVER.  Last Friday Julie came over, ate breakfast, sipped coffee, and shared a bunch of laughs with us.  Then we started her shoot.  Julie is a massive rockstar.  Obviously we’re not going to show you all of her pictures but we are going to show you some pictures of our morning together.

If you’ve ever thought that this would be fun or something you might like to do – you should totally DO IT!  Julie was nervous at the idea of doing a boudoir shoot but at the end of the day we ended our session feeling like old friends.  These sessions are filled with food, coffee (always coffee), and lots and lots of laughter.

Thanks for being so awesome Julie – can’t wait until your wedding!

Missouri Heart Gallery {Community}

May 3rd, 2012

One of the things we have a heart for is adoption.  5 years ago we were introduced to the Heart Gallery.  For those not familiar with what this is it is an online gallery of photos (& travelling exhibit)  of children, taken by local photographers who volunteer, who are legally eligible for adoption from foster care.  There are currently 1,400 children in Missouri looking for a forever family.  Here are some of the numbers that the Missouri Heart Gallery lists on there site:

Last year, Missouri had 10,317 children in out of home placements: foster homes, relative placements and residential institutions (group homes).

The State of Missouri has approximately 1,400 children waiting for an adoption placement, with the older children always the most difficult to place.

  • 5% 0-1 year
  • 25% 1-5 years
  • 20% 6-10 years
  • 28% 11-15 years
  • 18% 16-18 years
  • 4% over 18 years

Length of Stay in foster care: Just under 2 years (725.5 days).

Last year 64% of children in foster homes were adopted by their non-relative foster parents.

Beginning tomorrow the Missouri Heart Gallery will begin it’s travel around the state with it’s first stop at Crowne Center here in Kansas City.  The exhibit, which features 8 x 10′s of each child, will be on display in the Level 1 Atrium through Sunday May 20th.  Make sure and take a look at each one of the kiddos and read their short bio’s.

Liberty Square {Random Personal}

May 1st, 2012

The last few weeks we’ve been meeting with several fantastic vendors (details coming soon).  Some of our meetings were in Liberty, so in between meetings we bummed around the square for a bit capturing the quietness of a Friday morning.  We thought we’d drop in and share a few with you…

Happy May Day!
